Why we exist
Black women in Australia face systemic barriers to career growth, limited visibility in leadership, and a lack of tailored support systems to help them navigate corporate and entrepreneurial spaces. While diversity initiatives exist, Black women remain critically underrepresented in executive roles, boardrooms, and government leadership. BGLU exists to bridge this gap by creating access to mentorship, leadership training, and growth opportunities.
How we got started
How we got started
BGLU began in 2021 as an informal group of friends navigating workplace challenges. Seeking support and solidarity, we started meeting regularly, creating a space to share experiences and uplift one another. As the group grew, we introduced speakers, professional development opportunities, and social activities like hiking and attending events together. Over time, more women joined our community, and BGLU evolved into a thriving network of Black professional women committed to leveling up together. In 2025, we formalized as incorporated association.

BGLU is a vibrant collective of mid-to-senior career professionals of Black heritage, dedicated to navigating and excelling in professional spaces that have historically lacked diversity and equity. We represent a broad range of industries, including mining, procurement, law, medicine, health research, international development, social work, environmental sustainability, and human resources.
We have hosted events focused on key topics like navigating boards and building a property portfolio, established “trios”—support circles that empower members to thrive both personally and professionally. At BGLU, we approach everything with purpose and fun —whether we are solving the world’s challenges on a hike, enjoying a sip and pottery making or debating black tax!
